ISO 50001

Energy Management Systems

Overview

ISO 50001 is the international standard for an energy management system, or EnMS. As with ISO 27001 for information security, it certifies an organisation’s management system — its energy policy, baseline, objectives, and the way it monitors and improves energy performance — rather than a product. A core requirement is measuring and analysing energy use: establishing an energy baseline, tracking energy performance indicators, and identifying significant energy uses. A platform supports ISO 50001 by collecting energy data, retaining it for analysis, and presenting it so people can act on it. ControlBird provides that monitoring and measurement layer; the EnMS itself, and certification, belong to your organisation.

Key requirements

Energy data collection
Measure energy and power use across the significant energy uses in the organisation.
Baseline and performance indicators
Establish an energy baseline and track energy performance indicators (EnPIs) over time.
Monitoring and analysis
Monitor, measure, and analyse energy performance against the baseline and targets.
Continual improvement
Review energy performance and act to improve it.

How ControlBird aligns

Collects energy and power data
ControlBird reads from energy and power meters and submeters over the industrial protocols it supports, such as Modbus, BACnet, and OPC UA, and from metered devices, so consumption and demand data flows into one place.
Historises for baselines and trends
The historian retains energy data over time, which is what an energy baseline and trend analysis are built from. That history is queryable, and also available over standard SQL for external reporting tools.
Dashboards and indicators
Charts, gauges, and dashboards present energy performance indicators and consumption trends, so operators and managers can see performance at a glance.
Monitoring against targets
Alarms, rule chains, and scripts can watch energy use against thresholds or targets, compute derived metrics such as demand or energy per unit of output, and flag deviations. This supports the monitoring and analysis the standard requires.
What your organisation owns
ISO 50001 certifies an organisation’s EnMS: the energy policy, the baseline and EnPIs you choose, the objectives and action plans, and the management review are yours to define and run. ControlBird supplies the measurement, historisation, and analysis layer those activities depend on. ControlBird is not ISO 50001 certified.
